Difference between MATE and SPOUSE- you cannot control your heart, and the one it goes for is not always someone you can have cubs with. In this world where such a variety of species come together, it is likely those unable to mate will fall in love. Mate are those who fall in love and can or have had litters. A spouse is simply the one you love, but there is no way children can come of it. These are usually the ones who adopt and raise kits that lose their parents, or parents are not mentally ready to raise them. This could be a pairing of same-gender cats, or perhaps two species that are just too far differentiated in size to mate.

I KNOW LIGERS ARE STERIL and I also know many of the species that have children here cannot in real life--this is a fictional story and I base it all off size, not species.

Prologue

A long-legged shecat sat calmly by a pool of still, clear water. Around her, faded cats with stars licking their pelts began to form. Their eyes glowed with moonlight as their range of pelts began to come in clearer. Some were mighty in size with bright oranges, whites, and golds being lined with deep blacks. Others were smaller, lithe, and long-limbed, honey pelts speckled with blacks and browns. Still, some smaller were earthen in color, eyes large and pale in the moonlight.


The shecat they formed around was slim and long-limbed, built for speed and the ability to steal birds from the air. Her ears were like sails, towering over her head, able to hear the scuttering of mouse feet from a great distance. Her pelt was pale gold, almost yellow, with neat, black speckles scattered along her body, twilight stripes lining teardrops down her face, and creasing her forehead. The serval’s golden eyes watched in interest as the star-licked ancestors took places around the pool, watching her in turn.


“Whitestar.” The serval dipped her head to an approaching tigress, pelt colored of snow streaked with the night’s darkness. “ForestClan will be relieved to hear you finally cared to make an appearance from SkyClan.” There was a hint of frustration in the serval’s tone. This cat had been her leader since before she could remember. Whitestar had gotten her position only the sunrise before the serval was born, and had remained as the leader up until two moons after the serval was made deputy. In a momentary lapse of judgment, Whitestar killed the kits she had birthed, and then killed herself on her final life, leaving the serval as the new leader of ForestClan. That was over a moon ago now, and Whitestar had failed to show face in SkyClan. ForestClan had not known if the leader that had guided them in love for so long had been denied a seat in SkyClan for the one wrong she had done in a state of panic. They had feared the worst.


“I hid my face in shame, Birdstar.” The white tigress’ eyes fell to the feet of the serval, hiding the pain that swallowed her at the memories. A small white tom with black speckles and a leopard’s build bounded over to stand between Whitestar’s two front feet, licking her leg. A second tom, this one golden and speckled, but with a tiger’s build, followed and did the same.


“We forgive you, Whitestar. You paid the ultimate price for your bad judgment, and you need no further punishment.” The first one spoke with conviction in his tone, and the second nodded enthusiasticly in response.


“Thank you, my kits.” Whitestar nuzzled the two adoringly before turning her eyes back to Birdstar, who watched with loving interest. Whitestar couldn’t help but smile at the way Birdstar watched the two hybrid toms. “You always did have a soft spot for kits.” She purred, but made no further mention on the matter, knowing Birdstar would never have kits of her own, unless one needed adopting. Clearing her throat, Whitestar drew Birdstar’s attention back to her face. Immediately the unconditional love vanished from Birdstar’s eyes--Birdstar could love what comes from disloyalty, but she had never been one to easily forgive the one who had done the deed. Whitestar had known that falling in love and mating with a rival Clan’s leopard would damage the friendship she had had with her deputy, but sometimes the heart cannot be controlled.


Looking around at the gathering of SkyClan’s cats, Whitestar took a breathe and let the sorrow clench at her stomach. They were waiting for her to tell Birdstar the reason she had been summoned to SkyClan. This was her punishment for her disloyal deed, and then for hiding from it. They wanted her to have to be the one to fill Birdstar’s heart with fear. Using her snout, Whitestar pushed her kits towards a well muscled ocelot shecat, who spread apart her front legs in response, ready to shelter the young toms. “Moonkit, Wildkit, go sit with Cherryblossom. I will take you hunting once Birdstar has gone home.” The kits obeyed their mother in silence. There was no sheltering her children from reality, though. They were part of SkyClan, thanks to her, so they knew as much as she did.


Turning back to Birdstar, who’s eyes were now narrowed in guarded curiosity, Whitestar whispered the prophecy she had been told soon after arriving here. “In the protection of the shadows, the heart will defeat those guided by vengeance.” Whitestar said it quickly, knowing how Birdstar felt about riddles. Whenever the medicine cat had told of a SkyClan message, Birdstar, at the time being Birdclaw, would question why SkyClan couldn’t just come out and say it. Whitestar had always agreed with her--and now she was doing the very thing the two had hated about their ancestors.


Birdstar was not angry though, but her eyes clouded with questions. Already the cats around the pool had began to fade, merely outlines. Whitestar willed herself to fade slower than the rest, but she, too, was fading quickly. “You may have to reach beyond your borders for this one, Birdstar.” Then the image was gone, Birdstar left confused and upset. Reach beyond my borders? But that is an act of disloyalty! I will not sink to your level, Whitestar. She knew the tigress would hear her thoughts back on SkyClan’s ground. Birdstar also knew that Whitestar would hear beyond the thoughts, too--the quiet little beat of her heart that repeated the prophecy over and over, ready to do whatever it took to save the Clans.
