Something broke into our yard last night and stole Lil's life for no reason. There was blood, but none of her flesh body was eaten. From what I can read of the snow, it looks as if something got into the goat yard, chased her under the fence, caught her and tore open her left side, and then left her to die. Following her prints, she seems to have gone and hid by the chicken coop then. A short while ago, while I was sitting my sorry ass at the computer, she must have dragged her body, half frozen and in still bleeding, to the gate where we normally go through to feed them. There she lay and died, to be found a short while later by my mother and me, still mostly soft, eyes clouded but frozen into a wide expression of agony. I failed you, beautiful lady. We were late going out to feed you because we both got distracted by meaningless things, ma TV and me computer. I am so sorry. I could have saved you, possibly. Oh God, have mercy on her soul. She was a good girl.

Lil is the daughter of Stoichiometry and Harry, twin sister of Phil and little sister to Chickpea and Penelope. She was born with the protective heart of a brother, and the loving soul of a mother. Bigger than Phil, she took it upon herself to be his guardian, protecting him from the bullies of the herd, and from the dangers of living in a sinful world. Despite her constant need to defend her brother, and having to dodge the wrath of her jealous big sisters ("mama has new children? no, we are the babies!"), she always found time to get away and beg for affection from me. I helped her into the world while Stoich was in labor, and I don't think she ever forgot that I cleaned her off while her mother was preoccupied with cleaning off the first born, Phil. There was...is a bond between us that will never be broken because of this. I love you, Lil. You did not deserve to die in such a dishonorable fashion.

I am sure you died giving your life for Phil, though. That is the only way God would have permitted.
