Prologue
Trees grow high, so high that the tree tops look like the sky, a sky of green. A wall of wood goes up almost as high as the trees themselves, elves and men alike are patrolling the top of the wall with bow in their hand, the bows already strung as if they are expecting an attack. They have swords around their waist that are sheathed and on their backs they have a round shield. Parts of the wall were burnt; others were patched where giant gaping holes were. Behind the wall is a large city with soldiers patrolling the city walls, the humans have a spear in one hand and shields in the other. Their armor has a green tint to it and the elves armor is a weird black colored flanged type of armor, they carried a wicked curved sword and a kite shaped shield in their other hand.
A shout from outside the wall made the guards look out into the forest. A man and a half elf, half human carrying a pale white egg and a purple one in his backpack were running to the wall.
“Open the gates!” shouted one of the guards. As the man and elf/human neared the opening in between the gate a loud roar split through the air and three dragons burst out of the brush behind them. One black, one gold, and the other red. The elf/human ran ahead jumping through the gate as it swung back as they tried to close it, but they were too late.
The black dragon dived down on the human, crushing him beneath his sword like claws. The gold dragon smashed into one of the doors of the gate, the impact was so great that the door shattered spraying wood shrapnel everywhere. The soldiers that were closing the gate door were thrown thirty feet back into the houses behind them, killing them. The red dragon flew in through the broken gate and landed looking around for the elf/human, he was nowhere to be seen. Roaring with rage the red dragon opened its mouth as a group of soldiers ran up to it. A blue glow, glowed in it’s throat and it was to late for the soldiers to dive for cover as a raging inferno of blue fire came out of it’s mouth, scorching the group of soldier and the houses behind them.
The gold dragon got up off the ground and fled , his side bleeding from where he had hit the door and he disappeared into the brush from where he had came from. The black dragon looked up as arrows bounced off his back , he jumped up clawing at the wall, scaling it in a matter of seconds, then jumped up on the top of the wall, where he tore apart the first soldier he saw with his claws, then swung his spiked tail killing three elven archers. He arched his head like a snake, then lunged forward biting a man’s head off, the body dropped like a dead weigh off the wall.
Three human spearmen ran up to the black dragon holding their spears out in front of them. “Foolish humans and elves you think you can kill me!” his growl rumbled through the air around them. An elf behind the dragon pulled out his curved sword and jumped onto his back. The elf lashed out with his sword at the dragon’s head, but the dragon turned knocking the elf off his back and sent him tumbling down the side of the wall to his death. The elves’ strike still hit the dragon cutting a scratch that went across his eye lid. The spearmen saw an opportunity and advanced forward taking turns jabbing the dragon in the chest, then the one in the front jabbed the dragon and the spear stuck in the dragon’s chest.
The dragon roared with anger and pain, in one swift motion the dragon pulled the spear out an threw it back to its owner stabbing the man through the chest, then he spun around swinging his spiked tail knocking all the men off the wall to their death. The black dragon jumped off the wall and glided down to the ground and landed next the red dragon, which had just dispatched the last of a group of elves. He too was bleeding from multiple cuts.
“Come Maximis, there is nothing we can do the eggs are gone...” the black dragon hesitated as a large group of spearmen came around the burning homes “We will be overwhelmed if we should stay here.”
Maximis cursed “Fine, Austen, but this is not over!” he roared, then took off through the broke gate door, while Austen followed closely behind and then they vanished into the brush of the forest. The half elf, half human that had been carrying the egg appeared from an opening in the wall near the gates. “Man, that was close call” he grunted. He looked up to see the elf queen. “Ayden! How could you put Strelum in this much danger by stealing a dragon egg?” she demanded.
“I-I-umm… actually it was two dragon eggs I took. I think it-” she cut him off.
“Two! That makes it even worse but this could work… we could train the dragons for ourselves and have a warrior ride them but one person will be assigned to one dragon and sense you stole them you can chose one for you” she said.
“Um… okay I will chose the one in my backpack” he said confused, then he stretched his arms out to give the queen the other pale white egg and she took it and gave it to the captain next to her. “It is only a matter of time till they hatch” said the queen “All we must do now is wait… Captain John you will be the other rider and you will be responsible of training Ayden in swordsmanship. You both shall be known as Dragon Defenders” she commanded.
“Yes, Queen Erika, I will do my best to train this one” barked Captain John. “I expect nothing more from you John. I will also assign a wizard to you both for basic magic training. “Yes my lady” both John and Ayden said and then Queen Erika walked away. “What now?” asked Ayden.
“We shall start you training immediately… To the training ground boy!” John growled.
Assault on Strelum
The sky darkened to night-dark, as Ayden patrolled the outside of the wall, his training was going well and he had become a fine swordsman, but the next few days he will be taught how to fight with a spear and shoot a bow. Ayden’s dragon egg did not hatched yet, but John’s did, it was a small white dragon with blue eyes, it did not have a name yet but John was going to name it soon. As soon as the dragon hatched it knew how to speak our language, which made Ayden eager for his egg to hatch. He knew it was going to hatch soon because it was making sounds. A sound of a bush moving made Ayden jump back, and then he grabbed his sword and unsheathed it, it was a pale white sword just like the one John has.
A giant wolf the size of a horse stalked out in front of him then stopped and stood up on all fours to his full height. Ayden gasped, he had heard of wolves like these they were a rare breed of wolves called, Tsarrs. They are feared by many humans for their unforgiving nature and there are rumors that they can talk, but that can never be confirmed because all the people that survive an attack from them never seem to remember the attack. He has heard rumors of one around Strelum, but never believed it till now.
“Hello human” the Tsarr growled “I see you are out of the walls and bare the white sword of Neclamen.” It stared at him with amber eyes.
“How do you now of its origin Tsarr?!” Ayden exclaimed his eyes widening. He lowered his sword but keep it unsheathed and ready to strike out.
“I am not like my brothers, I eat wild food not humans, so do not worry I will not attack you. I swear upon my life” he barked. “That sword is well known by me because I have seen the elf that wields it; he is a mighty warrior…” the Tsarr blinked without taking his gaze off Ayden. “What is you name young one?” asked the Tsarr with curious eyes.
“Me?” Ayden asked putting his sword away; he felt safe enough to trust the Tsarr “I am Ayden and what might your name be and why are you here?” he asked nicely. Looking at the wolf up close for the first time he saw that his fur was a metallic color and shined when light hit it. His paws where as big as a bears and his top canine teeth where so long they stuck out over his lip and hung down past his bottom jaw.
“I am known as The Bright One, but you can call me Farrar” he barked. “Why am I here?” Farrar’s face flashed with sadness “I have come here to try and start an alliance with you race. The dragons have drove us to the edge of destruction only hundred or less of my kind are left, we need your help elf/human” he growled looking down at his paws.
Ayden looked at the ground and thought for a while. This could work we need help and here it is in a form we would never think of. “Okay I will try my best to get this alliance. Meet me here, tomorrow at noon, I shall bring Queen Erika and Captain John and I promise they will not hurt you” Ayden swore.
Farrar stared at him for a while then finally barked “I will trust your word elf/human and I shall not attack either. So now I must say farewell till tomorrow” that said Farrar turned around, but before he jumped away he growled a terrifying growl “Beware a dragon approaches only one but other creatures I do not know are with him. If you need help yell out: The Bright One you are need by Ay” then he disappeared into the darkness. Ayden heard the clanking of armor in the brush; he pulled his sword out and ran to the gates cursing at his self for not bringing a shield. As he got in front of the gate, an object flew by his face and hit the gates in front of him with a Thud. He looked over to see a green creature. Goblins! They lined up drawing their swords, behind them were four trolls with a large battering ram in their hands.
“We’re under attack!!” he yelled but before he could say anymore two goblins charged him their swords held high. Ayden jumped to the left and sprang pass the goblins twisting around he stabbed one though the back, it slide off his sword and landed on the ground limply. The other one turned around and swung its sword at him, the sword whistling though the air. Ayden ducked down and the sword went over him, then he stood up and swung his sword up it caught the goblin in the chin and its head snapped back, breaking its neck and it fell to the ground dead. A horn blew and he looked behind him to see at least one hundred Goblin soldiers with more filling in behind them.
Fear filled Ayden’s body, and then he yelled “The Bright One you are needed by Ay!” Nothing moved around the Goblins and they charged. Ayden looked up to see a large knot of fire arrows barreling down to the Goblins. They hit with deadly accuracy wiping out the first two rows of the Goblins. A blood thirsty roar roared beside Ayden he looked over to see the battering ram moving toward him he jumped out of the way and the battering ram smashed a human size hole in the gate. Ayden got up and jumped in the gate to see spearmen running to the gates.
“Form ranks of five and wait till they charge and you don’t charge them” Ayden commanded and the soldiers obey. Twenty archers ran to the gates and Ayden gave them the command “Ten archers on each side as they enter shoot as many as possible.” They scattered to the side as another hit shook both gates. A hand grabbed Ayden on the shoulder and John stood next to him.
“Nice work… You can leave it to me” he said. Moving forward he ordered the swordsmen to stand in the gaps between the archers and spearmen.
“No, I will not leave there is a dragon with them” Ayden growled. “I will explain everything after this” he promised John quietly and John nodded. Another hit and the doors slammed open, but instead of charging the Goblins and trolls moved to the side quickly and the red dragon, Maximis, slid in, his red armor gleaming with blood already. He slid knocking down the swordsmen in front of John and Ayden.
“So we meet again elf/human” Maximis growled. The Goblins charged in engulfing the spearmen in a fury of green bodies. John stepped in front of Ayden and held out his sword up and put his shield out in front of him. Maximis pulled his head back, but before he struck out a wave passed though the Goblins pushing them down and then Farrar jumped out onto the dragon biting down on the back of its neck. Maximis howled in pain and thrashed around but could not throw the Tsarr off.
John jumped forward but got hit by the dragon’s tail knocking his shield out of his hand and him to the ground. Ayden sheathed his sword and looked around on the ground and saw a spear, he ran over and picked it up he turn around just in time to see Farrar fly off the dragons back. Ayden ran in front of Maximis and held his spear up to his throat; the dragon pulled his head back and struck out.
Ayden move the spear up a little at the last moment and the spear struck Maximis in the throat, the pole slipped out of Ayden’s grasp and the flat end of it wacked him in the chest driving the breath out of Ayden. A terrible gagging sound erupted from Maximis and he shuddered once and collapsed to the ground dead. Ayden looked up at the Goblins to see them being driven off by the humans who had moved down off the wall to back up the elves. Ayden turned around and ran to Farrar.
“Are you okay?” he asked. As he got over, the Tsarr got up limping around.
“I am fine just pulled a muscle” he winced as he stepped on it, and then sat down leaning to one side.
John walked up to Farrar with thoughtful eyes, blinked and then said “Wow I never thought I would meet a Tsarr and they talk!” He laughed. “Thanks for saving me it was a brave thing to do” John said and bowed.
“I would have done it for anyone to get a chance to kill that dragon” Farrar barked. “It is nice to meet the great elf warrior, John” chirped weirdly and then he too bowed. “Well now that I am here I wish to speak to your queen?” he asked.
“I think she will be pleased to see you and the King of men is here, Porathegoth he will want to see you too” he said. John surveyed the battlefield, the elven archers had been directly attacked by the look of it, they were all dead, most of the spearmen had been injured, cuts and dents in their armor and the red stain of blood on it too. Goblins lay dead on the ground there are more of them dead then humans and elves combined; that is good he hoped.
The gates are broken… again, after they had just fixed them, shattered open, the wood broken like tooth picks from the battering ram. Maximis lay on his belly, his wound still bleeding slowly out onto the green ground turning it scarlet red, almost the same red as his scales.
“Well that’s that” said John, but is if a cue a ball of fire burst through the middle of the wall falling down on a large group of injured men killing them. “Second wave!” shouted John.
“Brace for attack!” yelled Ayden, drawing his sword, but then he turned to Farrar. “What do you smell?” he asked.
Farrar opened his mouth and drew in air, he snapped his mouth closed and his eyes widened in astonishment. “Two dragons, goblins, and Skarts; Skarts are a dragon like creature but skinnier and smaller, so the goblins can ride them, they can’t breath fire luckily” he growled, then jumped forward.
The Goblins charged in the broken gates, while the Skarts dove down from the top of the unguarded wall. Farrar sprinted forward and jumped up twenty feet in the air landing on a Skart; he tore the Goblin off its back with his claws and bit down on the back of its neck. The Skart let out a terrible wail and dropped the ground; right before it hit the ground Farrar jumped down and landed next to Ayden.
Ayden was about to charge in, but someone called his name he looked around to see John running to him, his arm bleeding from a long scratch in it.
“Queen Erika has ordered me, you, and Farrar to abandon the city. We will escape through the wall, but we must get to the top before we leave to see if there is any hope left…” he stopped gasping for air. After he got his breath back he growled “Follow me! We will have ten of the top soldiers with us; they are the Queen’s body guards” then John turned around and ran to a door in the wall occasional knocking a Goblin or two out of his way then he entered the darkened opening as he opened the door.
Ayden followed killing one Goblin on the way to the door; he stopped next to the door and turned around waiting for Farrar to go in. It was just big enough for him to jump into as Ayden turn to follow him in a loud roar roared outside and the black dragon, Austen, dove down from the top of the wall and landed in front of Ayden.
Ayden turned around and ran in the door he heard a growl “Come here boy!” then he heard wood being torn behind him then claws scrabbling up the wall. As he got to the top he saw eight of Queen Erika’s guards in front of her hold their swords out backing up. Ayden ran up to the Queen.
“Where in John and Farrar?” he asked her quickly.
The Queen’s eyes flashed with worry “They are fighting the black dragon” she mumbled. Ayden ran around her and pushed his way through the guards. He burst through the opening, dawn is coming, a faint light shone through the tree tops. Ayden turned his head to see Austen, the dragon had pinned John down under one of his feet; it looked like John had been stabbing at Austen’s leg because there was blood running down his leg. Farrar with jumping around trying to get at Austen but the dragon keeping him at bay by using his free leg to block the attacks and nipping at the Tsarr.
John reached for his sword which is just out of his reach, so he grabbed his dagger and stabbed Austen in the leg, Austen his in pain and picked his leg up and kicked John into the opening of the stairs where he rolled down and bowled over a few of the guards before he came to a stop.
